Cloud-based storage and citizen science platforms such as NWNZ have come a long way in recent years. They now offer great tools for many monitoring and research tasks. Interoperability between systems is the next frontier and is urgently needed in the data mapping sector where there are many competing tools.

See this new paper "Combining biological data mapping with citizen science" about the benefits of saving your species observations to the NatureWatch NZ online site. Note that NWNZ supports data collected with location and date information. You can download this and create maps and appropriate analyses in any GIS, like the free Open Source Software ‘QGIS’.

MAIN Trust demonstrates how to use a GIS on your computer to map hundreds of observations to provide a visual understanding of the data.
